Westchester Green Business Challenge

logos designs 5The recently launched Westchester County Climate Change & Sustainability program asks every resident, business, government and school to strive to reduce its “carbon footprint” by 20 percent by 2015 and 80 percent by 2050.

As a member of the planning team for the Business Sector portion of the Westchester Action Plan, our goal was to develop a program that would motivate as many businesses as possible to move on the path toward sustainability and ultimately lower their green house gas emissions in accordance with the county goal.

We created the Westchester Green Business Challenge, a friendly competition modeled after the Chicago Green Office Challenge that was developed by ICLEI and the City of Chicago. An interactive scorecard provides businesses with 82 potential strategies where they can accrue points for accomplishments in the areas of: Outreach, Energy, Transportation, Land Use, Water Resources and Waste, Recycling, Green Procurement. To support Westchester businesses on their path to sustainability, the program offers case studies, on-line help, telephone support, a Green Business Directory of local product/service providers (coming soon), and planned educational forums/networking events.

Challenge participants will be recognized by Westchester County, the Business Council of Westchester, and ultimately by consumers and businesses that prefer to do business with a green company. As this program grows, it will help build a green economy in Westchester County.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Addressing it requires a holistic approach and the continuous sharing of best practices. If you live or work in Westchester County and would like to learn more about this program, please email me at If you live or work outside of the area, I encourage you to consider a similar program and would be happy to offer help and advice. Please use the SHARE THIS link below to spread the word and make green business VIRAL.

Wishing you a happy holiday & healthy New Year!
