Reminders Help Change Behavior

Blog 5-2

As Green Teams work to influence behavior change among fellow employees to be mindful of the environment, they are turning to simple ideas such as posting reminders. Often people want to do the right thing, they just forget… to turn out the lights, to bring a reusable bag to the store, to unplug computers and appliances, and so on. Here are some examples of green teams using simple but effective reminders in the workplace:

1. Genentech, a biotech company with headquarters in San Franciso, CA, has a long-standing commitment to sustainability. Since 2003, their “Green Genes” team has been working to engage employees in sustainable practices at work and at home. In 2007, they launched a sustainability suggestion website. The winning suggestion went to the Green Genes Pledge idea – a small pledge card summarizing good workplace environmental practices. “We offered the cards to employees to sign and post in their offices to publicly demonstrate their commitment and remind themselves to turn off lights, conserve water, recycle in the correct bins, print double-sided, drink from reusable cups and not to drive to work alone.”

2. Town of Cortlandt, NY, the municipal town government is working to reduce energy consumption by 25% by 2012, know as their 25×12 campaign. To help in the effort, the Cortlandt Green Team:

a. posted signs above the light switches throughout Town Hall “Conserving 25% by 2012, Please turn off the lights!”

b. sends weekly email reminders, “Today is Friday! Please remember to turn off your computer, monitor, calculator and all peripherals. Thanks! The Town of Cortlandt Green Team”.

Do you have any ideas for simple reminder messages? Feel free to share them and photos are welcome!
