Community Swap – a great way to REUSE

On September 22nd, the Town of Cortlandt is holding a Community Swap.  Although a new name, this is their 3rd year holding this event.  It is astounding to watch all of the items come in… and all of the items go out.  Nothing goes to the landfill or incinerator. Instead, these items are enjoyed by new families in the community.

According to EPA, 250 million tons of waste were generated in the US in 2010, with each person creating 4.4 pounds of waste per day. Reusing keeps materials out of the waste stream and requires less energy and waste than new manufacturing or recycling because it doesn’t need to be reprocessed.

And you know what… the SWAP is fun!  Everything is FREE to take home.  Kids ride around on (almost) new 3-wheelers, or enjoy new toys and games.  Adults walk away with handfuls of books to read, a new kitchen blender, or framed artwork for their walls.

The Town of Cortlandt Community Swap also features a “green fair”, reinforcing the importance of helping the environment.  Residents have the opportunity to learn about energy efficiency and renewable energy for their homes, enjoy local foods, and sample organic spa products from local vendors.

If you live in the area, and have items to SWAP, or furniture to donate to people in need, please see the attached flyer to learn how to participate.

Does your community have a REUSE program?  Let us know.
