Most people want to be eco-friendly but for the most part at least currently sometimes going green technlogoy is not financially a good idea currently.I have looked at eco-friendlyand green technology alternatives like igo green charger and have adapted where it makes financial sense. So far I have also installed solar panels on my home but while looking for a electric car I find the cost doesnt justify it for me. While I am passionate about making green choices and opting for green technology whenever possible it is up to people like you and I to spread awareness and let the companies know there is a demand. Your website looks popular and I think you can help influence society with your insight and green technology tips. I respectfully disagree with the BHAG concept. It is great; it is what companies should do. The problem is it can’t get off the ground in reality. Working to green companies is what I do for a living, and I can’t tell you the number of company leaders who are doing well financially have fear (really, undereducation) about sustainability. BHAG scares them, and they avoid such a program. Unfortunate, but that’s the reality in a lot of companies, big and medium.

Actually, I just posted a blog article on my website this past weekend (www.CCESworld.com/blog) with an idea of going in the opposite direction. Convince your managers to implement one, simple sustainability project. See that it’s simple, not expensive, and yet effective. Do a couple of these and then upper management loses (or reduces) that fear, then you could approach BHAG. I give specific examples of simple, inexpensive projects on the energy side. Check it out.

Thanks Elizabeth… yes, basically we would train the green team to research the best option for their company from no cost/low cost to options that may require an investment. And when a financial investment is required, they learn how to justify the costs based on the triple bottom line.

Hi, Dani,

This is a great post. Would setting this up be part of a Green Team Spirit “package”, if you were hired by a company to manage it’s activities and implement eco-conscious practices? I think people often don’t want to be bothered with the logistics of changing habitual protocol, but if you can come in and “handle it” as part of an overall shift, it will probably get more buy-in from the old school.

Dani, it’s great that you’re focusing on this application of technology which has been around for a while but slow to be adopted for the most paper-consuming activities out there…including board meetings! New, more efficient web-based platforms are popping up for just about every purpose these days. Universities are moving class projects and discussions to the web, companies are videoconferencing more instead of jumping on the airplane – all of which is having a positive impact on the environment. I am wondering whether there are any good open source solutions out there that would allow smaller non-profits or volunteer-based boards to leverage this technology without the hefty pricetag…
